Frequently asked questions
How MarshHQ works today — logging, weather, bag limits, groups, and running a club. For a fuller walkthrough, see personal & lease-group hunting or running a club.
Logging hunts
Personal hunt or blind session — which am I logging?
A personal hunt is a quick log at one of your own spots — date, spot, birds, done. A blind session is a live group hunt at a blind you share: it runs while you hunt and attributes birds to each shooter. If you belong to a lease group, LOG HUNT asks which one you mean; if you don’t, you go straight to the personal log.
Do I need a signal to log a hunt?
Yes — MarshHQ needs a connection to save. If a save fails, the form keeps everything you entered so you can retry when you’re back in coverage; just don’t close or reload the page, or the draft is gone.
Youth hunters
Can I log my kid’s hunts?
Yes. Add a youth hunter under Profile → Youth Hunters with a first name and birth year — they don’t need an account. Then pick them when you add hunters to a blind session, or check them onto a reservation. Their birds are attributed to them and roll up on their own progress page: birds, hunts, seasons hunted, favorite species, a species breakdown, first hunt and how old they were, and their best season. It’s free on every plan.
What does MarshHQ store about my child?
A first name and a birth year. No surname, no date of birth, no license. Only you can see your youth hunters; the others on a hunt or a reservation see a first name and a youth marker, nothing more. The age shown is the age they turn this calendar year — a milestone label, not a regulatory answer. MarshHQ does not decide youth-season eligibility; that varies by state and zone, so check your state’s rules.
Do my kid’s birds count toward my stats?
No — they’re kept separate on purpose. Your all-time stats and season analytics count your birds; theirs live on their own page. On a blind session a youth is a named shooter like anyone else, and the PDF export marks them as youth so a warden can see why there’s no license number on that line.
Does a youth take a seat on a reservation?
That’s the lease’s call. By default a youth takes a seat like a guest and counts toward the guest cap. A lease lead can switch the lease to let youth ride along free — no seat, no guest cap — which means a member could bring three kids on a one-guest lease, so it’s off until someone turns it on deliberately.
What happens when they’re old enough for their own account?
You send them a hand-over link from your Youth Hunters page. It works once, and only on their own account — they sign up, claim it, and every hunt you ever logged for them moves to their record and leaves your view. There’s no age gate; when to hand it over is your call as the parent. Making a new link cancels the old one, so a link sent to the wrong address can be revoked.
Weather
How does weather get saved with my hunts?
Hunter Pro records the conditions — temp, wind, pressure, moon — with every hunt automatically: live conditions for a same-day log, that day’s archive record for a backdated one. On the free plan you still see current conditions in the log form, but they aren’t saved with the hunt. Anything already recorded on your hunts stays visible on every plan.
Why does one of my hunts say “no weather”?
Three usual reasons: it was logged on the free plan (conditions aren’t recorded there); the date was too recent for the weather archive, which lags a few days — with Hunter Pro, re-saving the hunt later fills it in; or the lookup simply failed that moment. A weather miss never costs you the log — only the snapshot.
Bag limits & regulations
Will a bag-limit warning block my log?
Never. The hunt always saves; if the day’s tally reaches a limit you’ll see a warning afterwards (“6/6 daily limit reached”). Warnings count everything you logged that day — personal hunts and blind sessions together.
Which limits do my warnings use?
If you’ve set a state on a spot and confirmed its limits, warnings use that state’s verified regulation data. Otherwise they fall back to general Mississippi Flyway limits. Verified data covers most states, with more shipping as they’re signed off.
Bag limits and season dates are for reference only and may not reflect the most current regulations. Always verify with USFWS and your state wildlife agency before hunting.
Analytics
Why is a comparison missing from Best Conditions or What Works Here?
Small samples make convincing-looking nonsense, so a condition group only appears once at least 2 of its buckets have 3+ hunts each — one bar alone compares nothing. Keep logging and the missing groups show up on their own.
What do the ducks-per-hunt numbers count?
Everything taken on those hunts — the occasional goose included. Species lines under each bar are totals for that condition’s hunts, not per-hunt averages.
Groups & clubs
Does my crew pay too?
No — members never pay individually. One payment on the Group plan covers your first 6 members; past that the group lead adds seats, still as one payment for the whole roster. Pricing at launch.
What does activating a group unlock?
Activating turns on the calendar, reservations, and waitlist for your blind, plus roster invites so members can join. It also opens the group-only tools: the fair-use tracker and group totals.
How do invites work once a group is active?
The group page shows an invite link — anyone with the link can join while there’s room on the roster. They’ll need a MarshHQ account; sign-ups are invite-only right now. The group lead can also add a member directly by email from the same page.
What does the fair-use tracker track?
Days hunted per member, compared to the group average — nothing else. It updates when a hunt session is completed, and it’s there to keep things fair when everyone shares the blind.
How does chat work?
Every lease group gets its own channel where the whole roster can post, and every club gets an announcements channel where the owner posts (member replies are a club setting; everyone can always react). You’ll see read receipts under your latest message, and you can edit or delete your own messages. There are no direct messages.
Running a club
What does the Outfit plan get a club?
Unlimited blinds, day-hunt bookings, guides, packages, maintenance tasks, and club analytics — one flat plan, no per-blind charges. A free club is capped at one blind, and maintenance tasks need the plan; the rest works on either tier. Pricing at launch.
How do bookings get made?
Three ways: you add walk-in or phone bookings from a blind’s calendar; members request hunts themselves when you turn on member self-booking (off by default) — a request isn’t on the calendar until you assign it a blind and confirm; and you can hold dates on the calendar directly.
Do my guides need accounts?
No — guides are profiles you manage: name, photo, specialties, party size, which blinds they work. You assign a guide to each booking yourself. Linking a guide to a real account is optional.
What’s a hunt package?
What a client books at one blind: duration, price (per hunter or per blind), party-size range, and an optional guide fee. Each blind carries its own packages, shaped by how guiding works at that blind — fully guided through self-guided.
What do club seasons control?
A named season — with split-date support — drives which days a blind can be booked and what the analytics range pills offer. You can enter dates manually or seed them from verified state regulation data, then verify against the state before relying on them.
Gear, bands & your data
What happens to my gear and band records if I drop Hunter Pro?
They stay yours. Adding or changing gear and band records needs Hunter Pro, but everything you entered stays visible, and you can still delete it.
Does saving a band here report it?
No. Federal band reporting goes through the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory at REPORTBAND.GOV → — MarshHQ never reports bands for you. The bands page is your own record of each bird and what the lab sent back.
Where does my license info live, and who sees it?
Profile → Hunting License Information: HIP number, state license, and federal duck stamp. They’re encrypted at rest, never logged, and appear only on your hunt PDFs — where a game warden may ask for them. The “License incomplete” reminder just means a field is empty in your profile; it never says anything about whether you’re licensed.
What happens if I delete my account?
It’s immediate and permanent — no grace period, no recovery. Your hunts, spots, gear, and photos go with it. Two things stay: messages you posted in group chats (shown as “Former member”), and your name on group hunt logs you were part of — those are shared records other members still rely on. If you own a club with hunt history, support finishes the deletion for you.
Plans & billing
What’s free?
Your whole personal hunt log — hunts, harvests, decoy tracking, bag-limit warnings, and season analytics — plus 3 saved spots, and public hunting areas don’t count toward that. Joining someone else’s group as a member is free too: you get the calendar, waitlist, and roster the moment their group lead activates it.
Hunter Pro or Group — which do I need?
Hunter Pro is for one hunter: unlimited saved spots, weather saved with every hunt, gear and band tracking, live group hunt sessions, and warden-ready PDF exports. Group is the plan for running a roster of your own — it turns on the calendar, waitlist, and invites for everyone on it, and each covered member also gets Hunter Pro’s features.
Where does billing live?
Profile → Billing. Manage your plan or cancel anytime from there.
